Mel stared at the duvet and pillow on the floor. She hadn’t noticed them go missing from the garage because she’d assumed Luke had taken them to the dump. But someone had taken them and brought them here. Mel shivered. Could it have been Gabbie? Would she have slept here? It seemed so unlikely that she’d have chosen to do that when she was so close to her own home, but what if Stuart had upset her? What if she’d been afraid of him?

Then she thought of Joe, and how much time he used to spend in the storage hut. Now he was back, hanging around the street.

‘The police need to search this hut,’ she said to her mother. ‘Someone’s slept here. Do you think it could have been Gabbie? Or Joe?’

Her mother blushed furiously. ‘It’s not Joe,’ she said. ‘Or Gabbie.’

‘How can you be sure?’

Her mother sighed and looked down at her feet. ‘Because it was me. I slept here the night of the party. I’d come to see you, but when I got to the cottage you’d changed the locks and I didn’t have anywhere to sleep. I remembered the storage hut and I thought I could take shelter there. So, I took some bedding you’d left in the garage and came down here.’

‘Oh, Mum,’ Mel said, feeling a stab of guilt. ‘It was freezing that night. I wish you’d tried to find me.’

‘Tamsin had already made it clear I wasn’t wanted at the party. Don’t worry, I was fine sleeping here. It was only one night. And I’m glad I stayed and reconnected with you. I’m happy to be back.’
